Even in the 1800s, their identity as \u201cSardars\u201d carried respect and recognition.<\/p>\n<p>Old Australian villages had a saying \u2014 \u201cWhen the Sardar comes, things finally get done.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\ud83d\udecd\ufe0f The Era of the Hawkers (1860\u20131930)<\/h3>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">From 1860 onwards, Punjabis worked as hawkers, buying household goods from the cities and selling them in the far-flung rural areas.<\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\"><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17441 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev12.codebuzzers.net\/sea7australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Copy-of-Copy-of-Copy-of-Untitled-Design-2.png\" alt=\"History of Punjabis in Australia\" width=\"577\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In the harsh Australian climate, this was no easy task. Yet, Punjabis became known for their honesty and reliability \u2014 bridging the gap between isolated bush settlements and the towns.<\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">One such early migrant was Nihal Singh, whose grave still stands in Manjimup, Western Australia. His funeral, held in 1895, was one of the first organised Sikh cremations in the country \u2014 a remarkable symbol of early community acceptance and respect.<\/p>\n<h3 data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u2693 The First Punjabis in Australia<\/h3>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Official records are patchy, but according to the Australian archives, the first Punjabis likely arrived around the 1830s, travelling via Malaya (Malaysia) and Fiji to the port of Perth.<\/p>\n<p>By 1845, a few Punjabis were recorded arriving at the Melbourne port as part of small Indian groups.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17442 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/dev12.codebuzzers.net\/sea7australia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Copy-of-Copy-of-Copy-of-Untitled-Design-3.png\" alt=\"History of Punjabis in Australia\" width=\"577\" height=\"303\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In 1857, the census listed 277 Hindus and Sikhs \u2014 all turbaned and Punjabi-speaking \u2014 mostly in rural Victoria.<\/li>\n<li>By 1881, that number had grown to 998, and by 1891, 1,700.<\/li>\n<li>The 1901 census recorded 4,700 Punjabis, but that same year, the White Australia Policy restricted Asian immigration.<\/li>\n<li>By 1911, only 3,698 remained, and in 1921, just 2,200 were still recorded.\n<p>\ud83d\udcca (Sources: Australian Bureau of Statistics, Sikh Heritage Foundation, Wikipedia)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\u2694\ufe0f Punjabis and the First World War<\/h3>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">During World War I (1914\u20131919), the British formed a special Sikh Regiment that included soldiers from Malaya, Fiji, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Many Punjabis from the region fought bravely \u2014 several were martyred, while others settled across Southeast Asia after the war.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Between 1925 and 1929, the Australian government introduced Limited Property Rights, allowing Indians (including Punjabis) to own property under restrictions \u2014 yet they were still denied citizenship or family reunification.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\ud83e\uddf1 A New Era (1945 Onwards)<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">After World War II, Australia\u2019s growing industries needed labour. Punjabis once again arrived from Malaya, Fiji, and Indonesia, working in fields and factories.<\/p>\n<p>However, they were still on temporary visas \u2014 unable to bring their families.<\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">In 1961, six Punjabi men from Woolgoolga (NSW) paid a special tax to bring their wives and children \u2014 the first Punjabi families officially reunited on Australian soil.<\/p>\n<p>By 1968, they established the first Gurdwara in Woolgoolga \u2014 today known as the spiritual heart of Australia\u2019s Sikh community.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\ud83c\udf0f Before Canada, There Was Australia<\/span><\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">When we search the history of Punjabi migration, we often find countless references to Canada, America, and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>But history shows something powerful \u2014 the first true wave of Punjabi migration outside India began here, in Australia.<\/p>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Long before the ships reached Vancouver or San Francisco, Punjabis had already settled in the Australian outback, earning respect as hawkers, farmers, and workers.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a story buried under the glamour of the North American dream \u2014 yet one that began here almost 70 years earlier.<\/p>\n<p><span data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">Australia wasn\u2019t a \u201cbackup\u201d destination \u2014 it was the first frontier where Punjabis proved their strength, resilience, and faith.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">\ud83d\udcc8 Today\u2019s Punjabi Australia \u2013 By the Numbers<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p data-olk-copy-source=\"MessageBody\">According to the 2021 Census, over 239,000 Australians now speak Punjabi at home \u2014 making it the 5th most spoken language in the country \ud83c\udde6\ud83c\uddfa (<a title=\"Protected by Outlook: https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/language\/punjabi\/en\/article\/census-2021-punjabi-becomes-the-fifth-most-spoken-language-in-australia\/6qt78y28d.
